They skipped the part where after the war we took the nazi scientists too…

But the old nazis were really into science, modern nazis not so much.

I don’t think other countries are going to be chasing our science deniers like we chased rocket and medical scientists after the war.

You don’t think Europe wants our 19 year old whiz kids whose laptops overheat from processing excel files?

I think the big disconnect with that is government laptops…

If someone told me their government laptop caught fire when they joined a Teams call where two people had a camera on. I’d believe them.

But no government employee will tell you a story like that, because it is completely unremarkable and expected. It’s like a Park Ranger of 15 years losing his shit when he saw a squirrel…

If you’re used to using a gaming laptop to edit text files and suddenly you have to use a shitty $300 government issue laptop, it’s going to shock you.

But the solution to that is funding the government. I’m not a big Obama guy, but at least he gave agencies money for laptops. trump and Biden love cutting corners though, which just translates to paying people to watch a screen scroll by slower because of a slow laptop.

My CPU was mid range when I bought it five years ago and I use it process a 300gb+ database of price history. My day job is working jupyter notebooks hosted on raspberry pis. Not being able to process a 60000 row database is definitely a skill issue. Bad hardware should encourage good software.

I am absolutely of the opinion that good software is far more important than good hardware. Unfortunately modern hardware is so good that inefficient software gets a free pass.

Or just. Everyone stop running please. When does the running stop? You eventually have to make a stand somewhere it’s either you or future generations paying this price. If you benefited enough to get out, stay and help others do the same.

        And do what, exactly?

When Albert Einstein fled Germany, he made the right choice too

What to do? I don’t know, what the rest of us are doing, figuring it out. They’re the smart ones, right? Yep, Einstein sure did make the right choice. Let’s think this through then. Who are the people actively being persecuted like Einstein? It’s not a hard guess: Palestinians, their supporters, anyone from the global south, or anyone with brown skin. Don’t worry, they’re actively deporting these people. They’re not trying to run, they’re just keeping their heads down trying to survive. Because your country doesn’t want any of us unskilled workers either. The vast, vast majority of people trying to get out are not going to be listed above. And if they are? I don’t blame them, get out. But to compare Einstein to people with degrees leaving because they’re afraid like the rest of us is absurd to the point of being offensive.

Which European countries are best for software engineers, where most people understand English, and they have an easy enough immigration system for long term work permits ?

Netherlands is best for money I hear, especially for the tax cut you get the first 5 years.

I live in Estonia and it has a nice startup culture, chill atmosphere, and just a great place to live, but salary is peanuts compared to NL unless you work for Wise, Bolt, or one of the 134234234 online casino providers. CoL is of course much lower than western Europe, but still much higher than it should be at the salary level here. But software engineers easily make 2-3x median salary, with 5-7x median salary not out of the realm of possibility at high-end positions in high-end companies. So you won’t be strapped for cash if you’re good.

Ireland, but it’s a small country. As only EU English speaking country, I’m sure they’ve had to digest a lot of immigrants since Brexit.

The Netherlands and Flanders in Belgium has a lot of people understanding English. I’d suggest countries such as nl, be, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, …

For a Roman country, I’d suggest Portugal. However the trick there is to work online for a company from your home country. While enjoying the low cost of living there.

Here in flanders I live with my wife who is from Indonesia. She’s been learning Dutch when she arrived since 2023 December. Whenever we talk to people, we speak in English. While the person then talks in Dutch to me whenever communication wouldn’t be entirely easy for them.

The level of English is fine here. Job opportunities are limited for English speakers though. You’d need to find an international company that has everything in English.

      Or a physical labour job.

My wife has a law degree, but until she masters Dutch, she will need to continue her job as a cleaner. (High minimum wage in Belgium, the job she does is 2/3rd subsidised by government. Which makes hiring people easier).

I have an accountancy job and honestly, everything is in Dutch. All the documents. Companies communicating with eachother is all done in Dutch so when that language isnt mastered, then it’s impossible to be productive enough at a desk job.

Brussels might have companies that hire English speakers. However, Brussels is a place where you thrive when you speak Dutch, french and English.

Like at the airport last Sunday all the employees there spoke to me in Dutch, to my wife in English and to other people in french.

Personally I would suggest Ghent. Most English speaking city in Belgium.

There are more English speakers in Belgium than German speakers. By a gigantic amount.

I’d even say there are more English speakers than french speakers in Belgium.

English clearly has become the language of the European union. It should be an official language in all of the EU.

Why do you think so? I know post docs basically only looking for jobs outside of the US, and several friends who got funding for grad or summer students cancelled, and know if one case getting pressure to change titles of dissertation to better align with the administration stance.

Science is getting hit hard here, the damage is done, and this could take decades to recover from. And that’s assuming things are able to shift back to where things were.

You’re not going to get an answer, at least not one based on logical tangible reality. If there was one it would have been addended to the comment to support the accusation to actually try and make a convincing argument in good faith. This is not that. The assumption is that you will know exactly what they’re talking about and upvote blindly in solidarity, sort of like a dog whistle, signaling to those who also listen to same right wing propaganda.

I know this exact same kind of comment by instinct because many years ago I too left those kinds of comments when I was an insufferable alt right assclown, and you will see it everywhere on any subject in any place where right wingers start showing up - the YouTube comment sections of certain channels, certain subreddits, all over Facebook, or god forbid you have ever bore witness to one of the most deplorable dregs of the internet: news article comment sections, when they were still a thing.

I actually wrote most of this out before looking at the profile because I was so confident, and after doing so for due diligence, I can confirm my suspicions. And if you unfortunately are forced to spend any time around right wingers, this kind of thing is common in their daily conversation. I shit you not I once heard someone blame an intermittent power outage on “the globalists”, and the others nodded their head in solidarity of outrage with zero evidence. It was a connection issue from the complex to the power lines, a transformer that needed to be replaced, as clarified by the utility company an hour later.
