For years, we’ve been hearing breathless warnings about a “campus free speech crisis” from self-proclaimed free speech warriors. Their evidence? College students doing what colleg…
They’re not that secret- and everyone’s just allowing them to do it out in the open. It’s not all that clandestine, Americans just happen to be huge cowards.
“What do you expect us to do? We might GET IN TROUBLE and maybe even lose our shitty jobs that we hate!”
Meanwhile, in Korea, middle-aged politicians are in the streets jumping fences and trying to grab cops’ assault rifles
As someone who has lived in the US earlier I my life, it was a bit of a cultural shock to hear how much Americans engage in repetition of what I call “freedom polemics” and references to the constitution and so on.
My initial reaction almost mildly combative, I did not find the locals’ commitment to freedom or alleged understanding of constitutional governance to be convincing. There was an element of farce for he whole thing and it got on my nerves.
It was clear that Americans weren’t actually committed to freedom or had any understanding of the complexities, nuances and painful, scary choices that are inherent to acting on your belief in human freedoms.
I very quickly learned to tune out the everpresent “freedom polemics” mini-rants and just go with the flow. When you are living in (or even visiting) a new country, you need leave your expectations behind to appreciate the good things about a given region/country.
Mind you, I don’t think it’s fair to expect some sort of super-human commitment from Americans to fight for freedom, we are all human with both strengths and flaws. That being said, people in other countries do not regularly go on mini rants about how they believe in freedom (even those that actually make massive sacrifices and put themselves at risk because of their beliefs in fundamental human freedoms).
They fell in love with their own reflection. All they can hear is their own words ‘Freedom!’ echoing in their ears. It’s a modern day tale of Narcissus.
Lifelong USer here, and the people who are the most vocal about that stuff while not acting on it are very much like the people who are most vocal about their christianity while being scumbags. It’s often the same people, honestly.

And how apropos for it to happen under the Narcissist-in-Chief.
Assuming we have social sciences in the future, scholars will study this pathology of these people for decades to come.

Holy shit that photo is wild. I can say for a fact that woman would be dead if that were the US.
Hell, the photographer would be dead too.
