Clinton slashed government spending so much he was the last president to ever run a budget surplus. However, Clinton cut spending when US debt was 50% of US GDP and now debt is 120% of GDP. Even eliminating the entire military budget wouldn’t bring a surplus today.

People buy stuff for the image. Apple has cultivated a certain image with its branding that people are attracted to and buy their products because of it. I’ve heard it described as “People don’t buy what you make but what you are.” The image and brand of the company is often why people buy from them. Apple produces products for cool hip people, not the stuffy old guys in suits! You’re a cool person, right?
Something being expensive is often part of the image. People like to pretend they’re rich and the more expensive all their stuff is the more they can project that image. It can also be self validation. Owning expensive products can someone feel better about their lives.

11·11 days agoIf an instance admin stickies a post it’ll show up at the top of all your feeds (unless you sort by “top”).
However, I checked lemm.ee and it doesn’t have any stickied posts, but it does have a month old post stuck at the top of “all”. Comments in the thread are complaining about it. I see lemm.ee is using the newest version of Lemmy (v0.19.10) so maybe it’s a new bug?
Sometimes she acts like she’s got something to say, but nothing comes out when she moves her lips. It’s just a bunch of gibberish. 😔

Not having enough cash to eat food until your next payday is dystopian no matter how it’s done. I think this is more to hide the fact that Door Dash is charging way too much for their service. I’ve never used it but I’ve had friends quit using the app because of the realization that they’re paying $50 for McDonalds. Turning the checkout price into $12.50, that you’ll be paying four times over, reduces the sticker shock and avoids people getting a reality check.

I’ve never heard of Nostr but Mastodon is a twitter clone and I don’t find that style of website suits discussion well since you subscribe to accounts rather than communities.

My friend’s dad is from Scotland. He came to Canada and works as a dealer at a casino. One day, two obviously gay men sat at his table and one of them put down his pack of cigarettes. People who complain that Lemmy is full of tankies have never seen the comment section of a meme making fun of landlords. I’m convinced Lemmy is actually full of landlords.
The porn. Right now the porn subreddits are mostly advertising for subscription sites like OnlyFans, Fansly, Patreon, etc. Reddit definitely thinks they can stop being used to advertise subscription sites and just become one themselves.
