  • Yeah but there wasn’t an algorithm picking out all of that shit and giving us a constant stream of 100% pure troll heroin.

Seeing one post in fifty telling you garbage puts it into the context of “that guy is saying some weird shit”. Seeing only garbage in your feed makes it seem normal and those opposed to it are the weirdos.

  • The problem with the subscription model is that it doesn’t incentivize making improvements. If I buy a piece of software, I’m not going to buy the new version unless they make significant improvements. With a subscription model I have to continue paying for it even if they make no improvements to the software.

The customers just keep asking for new things. Does a meal planning app need to be a subscription service? Probably not. But anything that keeps on adding new features costs a lot of money. Software engineers aren’t cheap.

This is a problem of poor sales and marketing. The sales people should simply charge the customer for the changes that are asked for. Of course neither the sales people nor the customer understand the cost (they think it’s just pushing one button). Sales people tend to have too much influence in a company (like they bring in the money, not the product, and developers are a cost) and they’ll say yes to anything the customer asks for even if the customer may not even care all that much. But hey if this company is offering free software development services, why not take advantage of it?

A service model might make sense in some cases, but oftentimes it does not. Most definitely not in the consumer market, but we see that everywhere now.

  • I doubt someone without depth perception would crash either. They’d notice the straps on the side, and things not being the exact colour shade. Might think it was a big piece of glass set up on the road, but that wouldn’t be something you’d just plow through.

  • There is no line, no horseshoe, not dodecahedron or whatever shape you might want to invent where you will conveniently put yourself as far away from Nazis on that shape.

Human minds are hard wired for tribalism. Political groups will always have a tendency towards tribalism and ideology only exists to recruit more members and keep existing member loyal to the tribe.

This is why you’ll notice a lot of hypocrisy in any political group. Why people will support the same thing they were previously against depending entirely on whether someone within their group is promoting it. Ideology isn’t the primary motivator for a political group, tribalism is.

Most of the comments I see from leftists here could be copy and pasted directly into a MAGA forum and they would be well received. Leftists and Trumpists are really only different in some very minor differences in terminology they use. Just find and replace “late stage capitalism” for “globalist agenda” and many more comments would work with MAGAs. And of course leftists won’t like Trump (he’s not in their tribe) but the majority of comments from leftists aren’t against Trump, they’re against liberals.

Nah I’m not bound by political “categories” because I’m actually capable of thinking about issues. But sure go on believing the complexities of humanity can all be placed onto some arbitrary one-dimensional line. Come up with as much terminology as you can to make that sound like a smart way to understand the world LOL.

  • Yeah it would be great to change 230 so that at the very least tech companies are liable for the content their algorithms recommend to people. Seems akin to publishing something so should have the same liability.

But that’s not what’s happening here. They want to repeal it entirely, this will create problems, which will give leeway for Trump to use EOs to resolve it, regardless of whether that’s legal. This will likely end up with Trump deciding what’s allowed on social media.

The point of section 230 was to allow sites to do moderation without that resulting in liability. Without it the lemmy instances couldn’t operate in the US without being sued into oblivion. What’s lacking from the CDA is anything about sites using recommendation algorithms to push content. Because that kind of thing didn’t exist in 1995, when the law was written.

  • Yeah but the First Order launched a fighter attack that took out most of the Resistance leadership, and after that success they decided to not do that anymore. They could’ve easily spotted any ships trying to escape if they had their fighters constantly harassing the Resistance ships.

So the idiot Resistance plan was to count on the First Order to be idiots. But while they were idiotic enough to not continue using their fighters (which were super effective), but not so idiotic as to not look out the window.

Have some sympathy for Holdo! When you’re an idiot in an idiot plot, it’s really hard to judge how idiotic your enemy will be.
