I’m not going to tell you what you can and can’t do, but it seems pointless and a waste of screen space to me, so I’d like to understand why some people do this if you don’t mind sharing.

It’s just clickbait from NBC, even if it is technically accurate. From the article:

Officials said that Ikner’s mother had purchased her former service weapons and that it was her personal property at the time of the shooting.

One of the federal [emphasis mine] charges against Mangione, murder through use of a firearm, makes him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state charges.
