Protectionism and isolationism have a robust tradition in American left politics. But even so, Unions have their own interests and American history is full of examples where Unions have opposed progressive policy. They are one of the biggest obstacles to universal healthcare for example.

The thrust of the article is good. However the Chamberlain/Munich “appeasement” is a bad reading of history.
First, Chamberlain had a mandate to prevent another war. 1914-18 was fresh in his constituent’s minds. Second, he had fresh intel that if a Czechoslovakian resistance existed, Britain was not in touch with it. Thirdly, Chamberlain had zero leverage because Britain was powerless to prevent German tanks from rolling East. The idea that Chamberlain didn’t do enough implies there was something else he could have done. Something Churchill would have done! But what was it that they could do?
Czechoslovakia was not “given away” by Chamberlain any more than Poland was “given away” by Churchill. What Chamberlain achieved was to make Britain 5 years behind when war broke out instead of 10 years behind.

It’s worse than that. Human rights are the number one justification for state violence and aggression. Not only are “property rights” the justification for police violence. The protection of human rights in general have excused nearly all invasion and conquest since the Berger revolutions deposed the “rights of Kings”. Hitler was protecting German citizens in Czechoslovakia. Putin was shielding Russian speakers in Ukraine. And the only thing George Bush cared about was Iraqi freedom.
I think empathy is misunderstood. Especially this notion that having empathy is a proxy for being a good person.
Consider the sadist. You cannot enjoy someone’s suffering if you can’t recognize it. Being manipulative would also be difficult without a grasp of someone’s inner life. A confidence artist must be an empath. A “cold read” psychic must be uniquely empathetic.
In 1921 Hitler gave a speech where he promised to put Jewish people into camps to see “how they like it”. (he was upset about WWI German POWs and blamed Jewish people for their long internment). So Hitler did recognize Jewish people as human and capable of suffering; that was the point.
Reproductive rights, the right to healthcare, prison reform, within a system that accommodates if not encourages parents in different situations to work and live with children is the best way to support young fathers and boys.

According to some psycho-annalists, you don’t have an authentic self. It’s just a Russian nesting dolls of personas and identities that we show the world, but at the bottom is not our true self, but instead another mask we show ourselves.
I’m not sure about all that, but personality, persona, identity, and self are all concepts we use to understand our consciousness. So it would be a mistake to try and reify those concepts as though they’re a real part of you like an ear or a leg.

No2 is CA so they’re statistically just as dangerous, maybe a little more than TX, but what shocked me was GA! Georgia is in competition with TX and CA despite having a quarter the population. At the same time they’re blowing past states like NY and FL. So the real question is WTF is going on in the Peach State?
