The only “free world” that the US was part of was being free of consequences to invade, annihilate, coup and oppress.
The relative freedom of white US citizens was always bought by the blood, sweat and tears of the people they exploited and murdered around the globe. And the freedom of speech only ever was as free as to not seriously challenge the system.
No, that’s not true. Starting in the 70s, the US slowly pioneered freedom for many previously oppressed or discriminated groups inside the US. This started worldwide movements. Many of those groups are still oppressed or discriminated against in other countries to this day.
However, European countries overtook the US in the 90s.
Meanwhile the US is now even going backwards, led by so called Conservatives, even though, this is clearly not conservative, but retrograde.
The US actively worked against all of those movements. It proudly supported appartheid and colonialism in Africa, propped up fascist regimes in Latin America and opposed the independence of places like Vietnam.
The US government didn’t like anyone that implied blacks and whites were equal, and in fact anyone who dared to imply it was spied and silenced.
Most of those ideas were inspired by socialism and were supported by the soviet union, but you wont hear that awkward truth inside the american education system.
Those progressive gains were won by grassroots opposition fighting for labor, civil, and LGBT rights against the US government that historically repressed those rights.
The foreign policy of the US has always been about Colonialism, imperialism, and Neo-colonialism; prioritizing regime changes propping up dictators to open up the exploitation of countries to the interests of US Corporations.
It begrudgingly half-way adopted things that were already common everywhere, then for the next decades went around the world spreading fascism and ultra-conservatism everywhere it went.
The US has always been a deeply regressive country

Until it adopted them, because the people won. The people wanted more freedom and convinced others and it became policy.
