“You’re just the kind of talent we need! A once-in-a-generation genius. We can pay you eight (8) dollars an hour. No union.”

You receive: 8 dollars an hour and trauma.

I receive: all the wealth your labor generates, whenever I want it.

      Deal or no deal?

If you mean self-checkout, they’re not being replaced by machines they’re being replaced by you. It’s just more shadow work you are expected to do for free.

As a socially anxious person, I absolutely love self checkout. Unless I have like a zillion items, then I use regular checkout.

As a socially anxious person myself, I like the idea of not having to interact with a cashier, but I hate the idea that some rich guy is profiting off of killing jobs and putting the work on me to do, so I only use them if I have one or two items and there’s no line.

Same for me. When I need to, I like to go for regular checkout lanes without a bagger so I can move to the end and offer to bag my own things. It gives me something to do rather than just stand there awkwardly.

There’s one cashier at my local grocery store who will often add a 10% discount as a thank you. Which is actually a crazy wage for the couple minutes of work.

I also play a game at Trader Joe’s where usually I’m mostly stocking my freezer so it’s a lot of boxes. I make my cart the neatest damn cart I can and I win my game if the cashier comments on it.

You save a lot of time from having more checkouts in a smaller space and can go at your own pace.
