SPRINGFIELD, Ill.—In a split with organized labor, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, D-Ill., vetoed Democratic-sponsored and union-backed legislation to protect warehouse workers.
“While I share the goal of protecting warehouse workers from dangerous and unfair working conditions, this bill was passed hastily at the end of the Lame Duck session without engagement with relevant state agencies or my office and presents both legal and operational issues that undermine its effect,” Pritzker wrote.
He cited issues that could have been resolved after passage as poor excuses for his action including an “unclear…definition of who is covered,” no “due process” in its enforcement, and no specific list of civil damages and penalties.” The due process lacking now as a result of his veto is due process for workers who are exposed to danger. He plans a meeting that will include business representatives to decide where to go from here in drafting a new bill.
If that’s all true, then it’s not really a veto as much as it is a “please cover these issues and get the right people in the loop to make sure we aren’t spending tons of money getting sued over this in court, rewrite this, THEN let’s get this passed”. It sounds like he intends to pass this with the issues worked out and specificity added.
It sounds like he’s taking a cautious and reasoned approach. What year is this?
He’s an advocate of the bill and doesn’t want it rushed, but that’s only from reading words as an outsider. If there is some extra there, I’m not familiar.
2025, the ravages and open corruption of neoliberalism have ensured that the trust of the working class in Democratic candidates simply does not exist.
how exactly is making sure that a rushed bill isn’t problem free with the right people in the room to address issues when the bill was written not progressive? sounds like jb is saying write it better and take your time to make sure it’s right this time instead of saying no.
I read it that way too
We won’t get what we need from politicians until a betrayal such as this comes with serious risk of being luigi’d.
This is the truth.
Politicians need to learn to fear repercussions from the people they are supposed to represent.
They don’t fear the vote any longer because, consistently, the politicians who spend the most money win. They just need to promise billionaires enough ill-gotten profit and they believe they’ll win. They don’t need to care about us at all–unless we force them to care.
