Dollar Tree is ending its short-lived and ill-fated Family Dollar experiment, offloading the discount brand for $1 billion – just a fraction of its purchase price from a decade ago.

Family Dollar has a focus on low income households in the urban core. They haven’t been able to make a profit from that demographic since before they were bought. Dollar Tree plans to pivot to suburban customers who are not as price sensitive.

Nice, they’re targeting the suburban folks who don’t shop at dollar stores. Great idea

Honestly, I think there’s a market for stuff that’s cheap enough that you feel comfortable throwing it out after using a couple of times. Seasonal items especially. Not good for the environment or overall public policy but the market exists nonetheless.

My wife goes there for party supplies that get thrown out after the party, or maybe they survive for a 2nd use.

Also gift bags and blank greeting cards. Sure the designs aren’t as hip, but sometimes you don’t want to pay half the price of your gift just for the wrapper.

How do they not make a profit? Every family dollar I have been to has products that are like half the size, but 90 to 110 percent the cost of a normal store.

FD somehow sells lower quality store-brand stuff than Dollar General. They need to work on that.

Why do non price sensitive customers go to dollar tree in the first place? They have daiso for that.
