Commissioners in a rural New Mexico county say pets are being snatched from front yards and livestock are being maimed and killed by endangered Mexican gray wolves that seem to have no fear of humans, prompting them to consider declaring a state of emergency.
In the latest flash point over efforts to reintroduce wolves into the western U.S., the commissioners in Catron County are meeting Thursday to consider a resolution that would make available funds to hire more people to investigate the damage reports and help haze the Mexican wolves.
Whenever you see “no fear of humans,” you know you’re reading propaganda.
The latest survey of Mexican wolves showed there were at least 286 in Arizona and New Mexico, marking the ninth straight year of population growth. Federal wildlife managers reported 100 livestock kills in 2024, saying that number is decreasing.
Only having 100 confimed livestock kills, which are compensated by the government, kind of defeats the argument that the wolf population is out of control.
Living in rural Southern California, I am uniquely qualified to inform them if they let their pets get snatched up by coyotes, wolves, bears, owls, eagles or any other creatures, they’re some dumb m-fers.
Everyone anywhere near this region knows it’s par for the course. Hell, I know one moron in downtown LA that is somehow the only person stupid enough to let his dogs get attacked multiple times by coyotes and skunks, right in the middle of Elysian Park, because he’s way too cool to leash the poor guys. The livestock bellyaching, as you describe, is completely disingenuous.
Yeah, it has nothing to do with responsible wildlife management and everything to do with emotionally insecure conservatives who can only feel useful and validated if they can live out fantasies of protecting something they own by violently killing monsters
I have fantasies of protecting myself from insecure Conservatives who aren’t sure if I’m female or male, but wanna beat the shit out of me either way.
(kidding/not kidding)
Sorry to say, this area is absolutely nothing like southern California. The largest populated area in the county is a village of 300 or so people. If you blink driving by, you’ll miss it.
That said, they could slightly adjust their lifestyle and be just fine. Wolves are more important.
“They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the cows.”
