Everyone anywhere near this region knows it’s par for the course. Hell, I know one moron in downtown LA that is somehow the only person stupid enough to let his dogs get attacked multiple times by coyotes and skunks, right in the middle of Elysian Park, because he’s way too cool to leash the poor guys. The livestock bellyaching, as you describe, is completely disingenuous.

We also made miniature slingshots out of fashioned bits of coathanger and rubberbands and would shoot eachother with uncooked popcorn kernels. In class, of course.

Dude, I don’t know but one of the most humbling moments I ever experienced was in an onsen in Hakone. As I dragged my hairy giant ape ass in and began to disrobe to shower off, all the Japanese men moved on, to a completely different area. I mean, this was the main hot spring, in a beautiful mountain setting, framing a perfectly composed wilderness but everyone had had about enough and decided to call it a day when I entered. My wife and I were the only non-Japanese people at that particular establishment. The food and the whole experience was amazing.

We Americans are not brought up to do anything nude with eachother beyond a certain age. I have extended family in Sweden and have known a few folks here who have saunas, etc. and there’s clearly a far more comfortable, natural acceptance in cultures that still do these things together.

Then again, that’s at the heart of everything that’s wrong with America. The erasure of history is what has denied us all the gifts we brought from the old world. I do love to see immigrants now preserving their culture and traditions and handing them on to their children. I’m second generation and my parents and generations before alike were too concerned with assimilating. You can see now the rise of racism overtly taking over. This was a thing that was fading out over my lifetime but certain hateful people will never let go. The kinds of things we lose when we erase history are immeasurable. In my family, I was not shown the shipwright’s skills of my forefathers. I was not taught how to make Italian cuisine even though my grandfather was a chef. There’s a lot of stupid protestant work ethic self-denial bullshit that has most Americans super awkward, uncomfortable in their own skins, etc.

Starting to get a lot of my news on Lemmy, just realizing. The interface, using alexandrite.app is more readable than scrolling through the twitter style platforms or reddit. More soulful than feedly rss reader.
