Sounds like the synopsis of The Forever Winter. Great setting for that game.
This is the plot of Horizon Zero Dawn
I guess I should get a bow and some arrows.
I had some, before I moved.
Let me just say this, what came easy to young me in boy scouts… well, I’m just glad if I hit a safe area in the general direction I’m aiming.
The other issues is as a boy I shot off the right of the riser on a longbow, and this was an off the left takedown (recurve) bow - still the amount I sucked surprised me a little, lol.
So hopefully you have time to practice.
Probably should spoiler tag that.
It’s really not much of a spoiler.
In general yes, but… that game is now 8 years old, has a successor AND a remaster. So… I don’t really think this is a spoiler anymore at this point.
This is also something you find out fairly early into the game
Isn’t it more towards the end of the first game, that’s when it’s fully revealed
IIRC the full reveal - and also why the game is titled Horizon Zero Dawn - is quite late. But I think the general theme, that those robots run on biomass is mentioned quite early, although not quite in the sense as it is portrayed in the reveal.
Yes, this is a late game revelation. I don’t get see why people don’t think it’s a spoiler personally.
This is the first time I am knowing of this, that makes it a spoiler.
On the other hand, I don’t plan on playing the game, so I guess it is not a spoiler.
Congrats! You’re one of today’s (un)lucky 10000!
If you think about it, any diesel powered vehicle is a robot that eats organisms for fuel.
And more than likely most of us here are using thinking stones powered by electricity created by very large machines far away eating organisms for fuel. Not to mention heating, but not everyone lives where there’s only two seasons; winter and July. (Actually I pay extra to have a 100% renewables contract I think but idk how well those work.)
95% of Finland’s energy is already carbon neutral.
“Carbon-neutral” isn’t synonymous with coming from renewables.
In 2023, the electricity sold to [my energy company] customers was distributed by energy source as follows: 25% renewable energy sources, 28% fossil energy sources and peat, 47% nuclear power.
But my point was rather a rhetorical one on a global level
Yes, but in this case it means renewables + nuclear combined.
oh hey isn’t that the backstory to horizon zero dawn?
"We finally invented the Torment Nexus from sci-fi classic Don’t create the Torment Nexus "
Well, at least there isn’t a narcissistic tech-billionaire around who doesn’t care about human lives and is closely associated with the government.
Yeah! Thank god that isn’t a thing! Also does anyone have the blueprints for tearblast arrows?
The image is old enough for that.
Paging Elisabet Sobek!
“At long last, we have created the Torment Nexus from classic sci-fi novel Don’t Create The Torment Nexus“
BLOOD IS FUEL
MANKIND IS DEAD
HELL IS FULL
CAPSLOCK IS STUCK
BABA IS YOU
dude remember that paper that came out that said “hey, you know we could have a colony on mars and build houses out of blood that’d be pretty fucked up right”
Bitch do you know what happens in Horizon where they make SELF REPLICATING SELF THINKING ROBOTS THAT CONSUME BIOMATTER AS FUEL
Fuck Ted Faro
It’s spelled Elon Musk actually.
The Matrix?
the orphan crushing machine is complete
finally…
What’s really concerning is that I have no idea if this is satire.
I think this is actually a real thing, but from like 10 years ago.
edit, there was a DARPA project that created a robot that could consume biomass as fuel, its acronym is EATR. According to wikipedia, it could “only” consume certain types of vegetation. But in the initial proposal, the developers also proposed chicken fat. So honestly, this probably exists and there might be a version of it that can consume meat.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energetically_Autonomous_Tactical_Robot
Phew. Chicken fat doesn’t seem very good, as we have enough meat eating already, but man a robot that runs on lettuce would be cool!
But, but… protein is an essential part of a balanced diet, and can provide more energy to the eater. I guess solar panels would be too woke, even if even more energy.
The game ‘high on life’ does it better.
I read it as "robot that can eat orgasms for fuel. My version is better.
It was fun the first 3 times, but now it’s starting to hurt.

Gabriel is hot🥵
That game is a bit too hardcore for me. I’ve had it since very early on. I love everything that it has become. Except that it’s fucking hard.
There’s a whole video game series on why this is a terrible idea. (Horizon Zero Dawn)
I really like those games. I just don’t want to be a character in them.
Something something fuck Ted Faro
iirc this was just an engine that could run on most combustible hydrocarbons, a small gas turbine and some elaborate digestion setup I seem to remember, and the press really stretched a badly worded explanation of how it worked into ‘it eats corpses’. Which is fair, humans are mostly made from tasty biomass, but still.
edit: here’s a couple sources about it, it sounds like it does indeed run on vegetable biomass.
The photo, however, shows search and rescue robots.
