Summary
Lawmakers are reevaluating Signal use after Trump officials mistakenly added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a sensitive national security chat about a planned strike on Houthi rebels.
Some Congress members have since anonymized their profiles for security.
Signal remains widely used for sensitive communication on Capitol Hill despite phishing attempts targeting lawmakers.
Officials stress that encrypted apps like Signal are still vulnerable to human error and phishing, though Signal denies flaws in its encryption. Lawmakers urge caution, especially when traveling abroad, to minimize security risks.
These guys are all fucking idiots. The pentagon warned a year ago, and google just a month ago, foreign nations have been sending tailored QR codes to targets in phishing attacks. If a user falls for it and scans the code, the hacker’s device is added to the user’s account as a linked device and will get a copy of every message the user sends or receives.
None of these twats are even remotely tech savvy and I’d be willing to bet that more than a few have already fallen for such attacks. Using non-government devices and apps for secure communications if fucking stupid.
Ah yes, solving the actual problem by changing your username.
It’s going to make it SO much easier to add correct people to secret group chats when their usernames and profiles are anonymized! Fucking morons as far as the eye can see, holy shit…
Good.
Don’t forget these morons are trying to install a genuine dictatorship.
This ship needs to be leaky enough to sink.
True. At the same time, this magnitude of opsec fuckups can, and often does, result in people dying, which is fucking sad and infuriating…
That they were happy being in a chat with someone only identified as JG or whatever is the whole reason this problem occurred. So now they’re all going to obfuscate their identities and make not really knowing who you’re talking to the norm so the leaks might be slightly less identifiable.
