Interesting how much people don’t understand. So for u normies, non autistic people here: NO , the skin doesn’t get like that by its own, it’s not moisture, cream or anything, it’s just we can’t stop messing with our thingers and constantly damage the border of nails like that.

When it bleeds I also drink the blood.

I did until like a week ago.

I’d had enough as they hurt and wasn’t getting better, I do a lot of rock climbing so the chalk makes the issue worse, plus I have not been doing great mentally so diet and hydration was awful.

    What I did:

    • Bought some Nails Inc Cuticle Oil (I am male, but it works). You just add a bit and rub it in. I now use this most days and definitely after climbing.
    • I know that with a poor diet I am likely missing vitamins as some of my nails had lines down them. I take a cheap multi vitamin everyday.
    • I am conscious to drink more water, although I already drink 2-3liter a day.
    • I am making plans to improve my eating habits as I get decision fatigue and really just don’t eat enough. Think I’ve been alive too long that food is just meh at this point. But I went climbing yesterday on hardly anything and felt incredibly sick.

My nails are better now. My mental health not so much but one step at a time.

You gave me fairly panic with that nail lines constant and I just had to go look it up.

No, nails having lines going down them is not necessarily a sign of vitamin deficiency. Turns out that the majority of the time it’s completely harmless and a sign of aging. Both index fingers and my right middle finger have a very faint dark line going from cuticle tip.

Your mileage may vary, IDK about your personal diet etc. just wanted to chime in about the nails thing

Interesting. Thanks and sorry for scaring you.

I would note that mine are on a single nail and less lines and more defined ridges where you can run another nail over and feel it bumping across.

Yeah; when those lines are horizontal – though –, you may want to worry. But vertically, usually not.

I’m positive 95% of your results came just from drinking more water. when your hands look like the picture, it’s almost definitely because you’re chronically dehydrated.

I am not so sure. As I said in the post I drink a lot of water.

So I wake up and have a cup of tea and for evening meal I have a can of Pepsi. Everything else in the day is just water and never less than 1.5 litres.

For me at least I think it was the climbing chalk and poor eating habits so lacking vitamins. I guess I’ll never truly know and it’s good advice to be hydrated.

I think the vitamin deficiency is more likely, I have similar issues. Lived in Phoenix for years and had a water bottle on hand all the time, it’s a part of the bigger picture but not the main driver I’d surmise.

I didn’t know about the nail ridges-vitamin deficiency thing until my lady told me recently, makes sense. She got me a case of the ensure plus for extra calories to supplement through the day and it does help. Eat some veggies, get some sunlight, maybe go to a shelter and walk some dogs. Hopefully the physical elevates the mental, I’m in a similar spot and hope you get feeling better internet stranger 👍

        Thank you for this.

I already do plenty of walking as if I didn’t I don’t think I’d be here honestly. I might look into ensure as I’ve had them from the doctor when my diet has been poor in the past.

Don’t know if you’re the same but life’s like a rollercoaster man. One minute I’m doing good and mentally happy the next I can’t get out of bed and off YouTube.

It’s like I’m just passing as much time as possible with no end goal in mind. Just death at the end.

I used to get this all the time. Now, if I get a hangnail, I liberally drench my hands in lotion, and put on nitrile gloves for an hour or so to force it to soak in.

A family friend gets me Gojo Hand Medic, which my fragile masculinity appreciates.

I also found it works well for breaking in leather work gloves.

You joke, but I’m missing a nail on one of my big toes and it’s so much more comfortable and less hassle that I kind of wish all my toenails were gone.

…not so sure about fingernails though. They’re pretty useful for picking things up or praying things open.

Is your toe nail completely missing, or do you still have some root growing? I have two that have a bit of root that just grows and gets uncomfortable until I pull it out. Not sure is trade the rest of my nails for that tbh

How exactly does the “root” work. I was wheeling a ticket podium with other items in my hands back in 2006, the podium slipped and landed on my left big toe. When I took my shoe/sock off I found the back part of my toe nail was square and had been popped up through the skin like the hood of a Corvette. I dumbly(?) tore the rest of it off and proceeded to be stupid and put my sock back on and finished my shift. Somehow the nail grew back but the part that had tissue damage where I tore it off in the front I guess never healed right and so the nail would have to grow ‘over’ the wound and would be really thick there. If the squared off back part isn’t the root, what is?

I’ve done the same thing just being absent minded. Removing the nail is something that’d probably have happened either way after it’s detached. It won’t grow, a new one should start from under it, and the dead one will just be an annoying hard thing hanging on to what ever skin is left attached. If part of it is still somehow stuck to the bed, it’s usually better to pull it out unless the majority is fine.

It took several months to grow a new big toe nail and it still feels funny (overly sensitive) to this day.

Idk exactly, but the root itself goes like an inch or so into your toe.

Kinda like you, I’ve got random spots where the root grows and piles up, but since most of the root is dead, it’s only like one or two spots on the whole toe. One of them is bad enough that once a year or so it annoys/hurts enough that I remove the offending nail and end up pulling part of the root out. Looks like a newborn horn off of an animal lol

Completely gone. Was badly ingrown and after a doctor removed it three times and it grew back ingrown again every time they just destroyed the root completely.

wtf, they took the whole nail off!? Not that I’d really mind, for the reasons you’ve stated. Ingrown toenails somehow run in my family, but when I get the permanent procedure done the doctor still just removes a slice off on the side. What made them do the entire nail?

Lucky, they tried to do the same for me, but they didn’t get all of it. It’s rather annoying at times, but I’ll take it over the ingrown toenails.

The same happened to one of mine. The doctor said it might stay gone after I removed it on my own (it was easy and painless) but it still came back again so we let it grow out a little until they could do their thing again. I don’t remember it being as bad the second time because there wasn’t much nail that survived the first round, so it was really just clean up. It never came back again after round two.

I’ve got one fucky nail and every two weeks I’ve gotta pull it with tweezers because it grows in cup shaped and the point of the cup is too pointy for my delicate toesies. I’m thinking about burning it off with silver nitrate.

Years back I was briefly into creepypastas. One I read was a guy who had a habit of chewing his nails and that people around him always made a big deal about it but he thought they were overreacting. At the end it was revealed that he had long ago chewed away his fingernails and was now chewing through his actual fingers without realizing it. As a result he was institutionalized for his delusions, I think.

This picture makes me think of that. Thanks, I guess.

When I was a kid, my elementary school was made of bricks that had a surface texture like 20 grit sand paper. Touching that shit started a chain reaction that inevitably ended with hands looking like this. Oh you accidentally brushed the back of your hand against the brick at recess? It’s a shame that every sink in every public toilets, workplace toilets or other people’s house still has soap with Sodium Laureth Sulphate in. Even the products that say “gentle on skin” tend to be full of the stuff.

I tried various moisturisers for years with not a lot of effect. Swapping my soap, shower gel and shampoo for ones without SLS in them really made such a difference, and so quickly.
